| Jim Genovese DJs, Hicksville, Nassau County, LI, NY (516) 361-8474 FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) Q: How much do you guys charge? A: There's no easy answer to that. It doesn't matter how long the event runs (within reason), or how many guests, or the time of the year, but we have to consider any special equipment we'll need, whether you want a DVD/Video Tape of the reception and other factors. Our best answer: we're truly competitive, and the price will likely be under $1000 for DJ/MC services, and under $1000 for video. It includes pre-event meetings with the bride and groom and their families (to select favorite tunes and plan special events), free setup and sound checks, etc. No overtime charges and no seasonal charges!
A: It all started with Jim's 25-year radio career, as a DJ/Newsman/Producer at a number of radio stations in New York, New Jersey, New Hampshire, North Carolina and Florida (here's a list). This is where he learned the art of expressing himself, of being 'entertaining', and what popular music is all about. Later on in his career, Jim went on-the-road, performing at weddings, anniversaries, company parties and many more. One of the many things he learned is the difference between radio and 'live'. Being able to see the audience, he could tell that he was doing a good job. If he played a series of tunes and everybody was up there dancing and having a good time, he knew that he was on the right track. If most of them were sitting down, it showed that he needed to change the pace of the music. Also, if Jim played music during dinner and people started singing along, it meant that the tunes were better than the food! Jim's lifelong buddy, Marty Curley - friends since kindergarten - stayed 'close-to-home'. Marty's career includes having met many celebrities/stars during more than seven years as DJ and Program Director at one of America's top-rated Rock station, WBAB in Babylon, LI, as well as 20+ years working in front of live audiences.
Q: Why should we hire you and not someone cheaper? A: Unlike other DJ companies you've heard about, when you hire the Jim Genovese DJ Company, you have our un-divided attention! Not just on the 'Big Day', but in the weeks and months before the event! In a best-case scenario, Jim and Marty will meet with the bride and groom (and parents, if you'd like) a month or more before the wedding. We'll discuss the tunes and activities of the reception (will you have a Dollar Dance? do you want any special music before the toast? do you want to recognize any special guests? will you want a video for the event? etc). ON the big day, we always arrive 3 to 4 hrs in advance to set-up equipment, do sound checks, talk to the staff (so the busboys don't rattle dishes and forks and knives during the best-man speech!)
Q: How much advance notice do you need before a wedding? A: Jim once performed TWO wedding receptions in one day at the same hall! He had gone to the reception hall with the first bride and groom a week before their reception to get a feel of the room, and to come up with late ideas, etc. The owner of the hall told him that he had another wedding reception in the hall just after our event, and he needed a DJ, and would Jim consider taking the job. He did. It worked out well! Even though we're generally booked weeks in advance, every now and then, we don't have a booking, so call for availability at (516) 361-8474. To answer the question in the spirit in which it was asked: we prefer at least one-month in advance. This will allow no less than two meetings to plan the reception, and time for your guests to respond, so we'll know about special arrangements, etc.
Q: Can you make a video of the big day? A: Yes! On DVD or Video Tape or both. We'll plan to get together in advance, as the bride and groom make arrangements for the reception, go shopping, party with friends, etc (recording the whole thing, of course). For your wedding day, we'll hire professional videographers to help capture everything on 'tape'. Then we'll edit it down to around one-hour, and add music and effects, etc. We can even make copies for your family and other relatives, if you'd like.
Q: What about the music that you'll play? A: All music that we play - starting with the first tune when the first guests arrive - will be a tune that YOU selected, and not just something that we like. Music during dinner will be what the bride and groom enjoy during quiet times, and - of course - music for the 'dance sets' will be tunes that the newlyweds - and family and friends - enjoy dancing to. Jim and Marty play every song "by hand" (we never just let the music play, or put on a tape or CD), even during Dinner Hour. Beforehand, the bride and groom will go through The RED Book to choose the tunes for us to play (we'll be there to help you choose, since we want a little bit of music that each of your guests will enjoy). Something you might consider: a bride once included a line on the RSVP card that asked "What's Your Favorite Song?" At the reception, when we introduced Uncle Frank and Aunt Helen as they walked in, we played the song and announced "Here's the song that Uncle Frank and Aunt Helen got married to, over 26-years ago...". Everybody seemed to love it!
